The Smith-Hughes Act was the first federal legislation to fund vocational agriculture education programs in public secondary schools. Agriculture education programs began to spring up across the country, teaching students about various aspects of agriculture, from food production to animal husbandry.
In some states, agricultural education was required in order to belong to the FFA. However, this requirement was eventually dropped, and today anyone can join the FFA, regardless of whether or not they have taken agriculture classes. However, most FFA members do have some background in agriculture education.
While the focus of agriculture education has changed over time, its core mission has remained the same: to prepare students for successful careers in the agricultural industry. Today, agriculture education programs offer a wide variety of courses and activities that teach students about all aspects of agriculture, from food production to management and marketing.

The Dangers of FFA Without Agriculture Education
FFA is an organization that was created to serve the needs of agricultural education and promote agricultural leadership. However, there are now FFA chapters in schools that do not have agricultural education programs. This can be dangerous for a number of reasons.
The Lack of Agricultural Literacy
In the United States, less than two percent of the population farms. This number is down from over 40% in 1900. The average farmer today is 58 years old, and the median age for farm operators is even higher at 60.8 years old. The average farm size has increased as the number of farmers has decreased, with the average farm now covering 441 acres. With such a small percentage of Americans having any connection to farming, it’s no wonder that agricultural literacy is low.
Only 26 percent of Americans know that hamburgers come from cows, and less than half know that french fries come from potatoes. When asked where chocolate milk comes from, only 32 percent correctly answered that it comes from cows. These numbers are even lower for young people: only 18 percent of millennials know that hamburgers come from cows, and less than a third know that french fries come from potatoes.
This lack of agricultural literacy has dangerous consequences. People who are not familiar with where their food comes from are more likely to believe myths and false information about agriculture. For example, 78 percent of Americans believe that chickens raised for meat are given hormones, even though it is illegal to use hormones in poultry production in the United States. 48 percent of Americans believe that genetically modified foods are not safe to eat, even though there is a consensus among scientists that GM foods are safe.
Without a basic understanding of agriculture, it is difficult for people to make informed decisions about the food they eat. This lack of agricultural literacy also makes it difficult for people to understand the importance of agriculture in the economy and in the environment. Only 3 percent of Americans think that farmers have a positive impact on the environment, even though farmers are some of the most conservation-minded people in the country.
It is essential for everyone to have a basic understanding of agriculture if we want to make informed decisions about food and the environment. Agriculture education programs like FFA play an important role in teaching young people about agriculture and helping to increase agricultural literacy rates across the country.

It’s a way to connect with other people who have the same passions as you, and it’s a way to learn more about the industry that you’re interested in.
One of the biggest parts of being in FFA is agriculture education. And I think that this is one of the most important aspects of the organization. Agriculture education teaches you more than just how to farm; it teaches you about all aspects of the industry, from animal science to agri-business. It’s a well-rounded education that can benefit anyone, no matter what their interests are.
So why can’t you have FFA without agriculture education? Because without agriculture education, FFA would just be another club. It would be a place where people with similar interests could come together, but there would be no educational component to it. And without that educational component, I don’t think that FFA would be nearly as beneficial or successful as it is today.
