We also provide support to individuals and groups working for social change in the region.

The Appalachian Peace Education Center’s Mission

The Appalachian Peace Education Center (APEC) is a 501(c)(3) organization that engages in education, research, and advocacy to end violence and build just and peaceful communities in Central Appalachia. We work with individuals, groups, institutions, and communities across the region to promote nonviolent conflict resolution and social change.

Our mission is to promote peacebuilding and social justice in Central Appalachia through education, research, and advocacy. We envision a world where people live together in respectful relationships, resolve conflicts nonviolently, and share resources equitably. We work towards this vision by:

Providing educational programs that train people in skills for nonviolent communication, conflict resolution, mediation, facilitation, consensus decision-making, grassroots organizing, direct action campaigning, community organizing for social change;

Conducting research on the root causes of violence and effective strategies for peacebuilding;

Advocating for policies and practices that advance peacebuilding and social justice;

Building collaborations among individuals

The Appalachian Peace Education Center’s Goals

The Appalachian Peace Education Center (APEC) is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to promoting peace and nonviolence in the Appalachian region of the United States. Founded in 1997, APEC works to build a culture of peace through education, training, research, and community organizing.

One of APEC’s primary goals is to provide educational resources on topics related to peace and nonviolence. To this end, APEC offers a variety of educational programs, including workshops, conferences, seminars, and courses. In addition, APEC operates a lending library with over 1,000 titles on topics such as conflict resolution, nonviolent communication, and peacemaking.

Another goal of APEC is to conduct research on issues pertaining to peace and nonviolence in the Appalachian region. This research helps inform APEC’s educational programs and also contributes to the larger body of knowledge on these topics. In addition to conducting its own research projects, APEC also houses the Appalachian Peace Research Network (APRN), a consortium of scholars who conduct research on various aspects of peace and nonviolence in Appalachia.

Finally, APEC works to build a network of individuals and organizations committed to promoting peace and nonviolence in the region. Through its networking efforts, APEC provides support and resources for those working for social change in Appalachia.

The Appalachian Peace Education Center’s History

The Appalachian Peace Education Center (APEC) is a grassroots organization based in the Appalachian region of the United States. Founded in 1992, APEC’s mission is to promote nonviolence and social justice through education, training, and action.

APEC has its roots in the peace movement of the 1980s. In particular, APEC was inspired by the War Resisters League’s “Appalachian Summer School for Nonviolence” which was held annually from 1982-1991. Many of APEC’s founding members attended these summer schools and were deeply influenced by their experience.

After the last summer school was held in 1991, a group of participants decided to form an ongoing organization that would continue to promote nonviolence in the Appalachian region. They chose the name “Appalachian Peace Education Center” to reflect their commitment to both peace and education.

Since its inception, APEC has been involved in a variety of projects and activities related to nonviolence and social justice. These have included organizing annual conferences on nonviolence, running a speakers bureau, operating a peace library, providing workshops and trainings on nonviolent conflict resolution, conducting research on violence in Appalachia, and engaging in direct action campaigns on issues such as mountaintop removal coal mining and militarism.
